Position Summary The Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project publishes The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., the definitive edition of King’s most historically significant speeches, sermons, correspondence, and unpublished manuscripts. The project seeks a full‑time research assistant to support and facilitate the publication of the documentary editions of the King Papers by conducting research necessary to prepare document annotations, a chronology of King’s activities, and introductory essays for each volume; verifying accuracy of transcriptions; editing and proofreading manuscripts; sorting incoming documents by historical significance; acquiring documents for publication; obtaining copyright permission agreements for documents and photographs; compiling a calendar of documents; working with editors to ensure accuracy of web‑based materials; coordinating student researchers; planning the summer internship program; verifying data entry in the web‑accessible database; digitizing audio/visual and print materials for web access; planning project events such as the annual King Holiday commemoration; and carrying out public relations tasks, including responding to outside research requests. The Social Science Research Professional 1 will work under general supervision of the Director of the King Institute and must demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement, a team‑based and customer‑focused mindset, sound judgment and decision‑making, effective written and oral communication, strong attention to detail, respectful relationship management, and a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics related to Social Science Research. This is a 100% FTE, 2‑year fixed‑term non‑exempt position. It will be based on the Stanford campus and may be hybrid (work on‑site and off‑site) subject to operational need. Core Duties Plan and perform research tasks of limited complexity requiring initiative and judgment when guidance is not available. Extract data and structured information from published literature and other sources. Assist in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, seeking guidance when necessary, and auditing data entered in databases. Conduct literature searches and write literature summaries, following a conceptual approach outlined by the supervisor. Build and organize data as requested by the principal investigator or faculty and use common statistical programs. Help orient and train new staff or students as needed. Assist with development and design of outreach materials and tools for recruitment, educational, or awareness programs. Adapt to new, non‑standard methods outlined by the supervisor or principal investigator. Present research findings to internal audiences, including peers, co‑workers, and managers. Administer questionnaires and rating scales using non‑routine scoring procedures. Other duties may also be assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor of Arts degree in a social science‑related field or a combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through an undergraduate degree in a related field. General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with human study participants.
