What We Look For In a Spanish 1 Tutor Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of foundational Spanish vocabulary, present tense conjugation of regular and stem-changing verbs, articles, adjective agreement, ser versus estar distinctions, question formation, and introductory listening and reading comprehension. Ability to explain pronunciation rules, gender and number agreement, and common irregular verb patterns while preparing students for novice-high communicative proficiency. Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching Spanish pronunciation, basic sentence construction, and introductory conversational skills. Guides students through conjugating present tense verbs, distinguishing ser from estar, using definite and indefinite articles correctly, and comprehending simple spoken and written Spanish. Emphasizes building speaking confidence through guided conversation practice and connects Spanish to Hispanic cultural exploration. Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with Spanish 1 curricula aligned with ACTFL novice proficiency standards and common challenges such as ser versus estar usage, stem-changing verb patterns, and developing listening comprehension skills. Adapts instruction using TPR activities, visual vocabulary resources, and structured conversation practice to support beginning Spanish learners at middle school, high school, or adult levels. Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles. Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style. Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
